MUST SEE!
This movie is a must see! How many times have you watched a movie only for it to end in an unexpected way? As a matter there is another behind the scenes story about this movie that matches the script in a weird way. Originally produced and released as “The Convincer” the distributor did not like the length or the musical score. Therefore the name was changed to “Thin Ice” and rereleased and recut.
This movie starts simple enough but the twists and turns it puts you through is worth the wait to see how this short movie ends. If you liked “Fargo” then you will enjoy this one as well.
Mickey Prohaska (Greg Kinnear) is a small-time insurance agent looking for a way to jump-start his business, reunite with his estranged wife (Lea Thompson) and escape the frigid Wisconsin weather. The movie starts with him at an annual insurance conference where he is taken advantage of by a local hustler. Before Mickey leaves the conference though you can see right away that he is a master of spin and believes that salesmanship is about selling a story – all he needs is a sucker willing to buy it. He hits pay dirt with a lonely retired farmer (Alan Arkin) who is sitting on something much bigger than an insurance commission. But Mickey’s attempt to con the old man spins out of control when a nosy, unstable locksmith with a volatile temper dramatically ups the stakes. As he finds himself in more and more danger, he begins to lose control of the situation and you start to believe that Mickey is going to do the right thing in the end. This movie blends some dark comedy and mild mid-western humor. The movie reaches a breaking point that no one could ever see coming.
